They were living in literal paradise and ruined it with their willful disobedience, introducing sin into the world in the process.

Luckily, even though we are all sinners, God showed mercy and pity upon us. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer and die, taking our spot on the cross. As the book of Romans states, “while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” He came in and made a way when there was none. He injected hope into an utterly hopeless situation.
